Welcome

This community-driven site is geared towards MRT Communication's Network-attached storage (NAS) devices. Notice that this page is totally unrelated to the vendor. Click on the links on the right to find out which variant you have.

Quick Start

There are two main kinds of MRT Communication's NAS box that most people coming here will have. The first and older kind is based on Storlink's Centroid chipset (35HD-DUAL-NAS, 35HD-DUALIDE-NAS) and the second and newer kind is based on Storlink's Gemini chipset (35HD-DUAL-NAS-E, 35HD-QUAD-NAS). The newer has better features but one major failing that it cannot be rescued without special hardware if you incorrectly change its firmware.

The firmware for both is based on a mix of bits & pieces (called Sausalito) on top of a 2.6.x Linux kernel. Most firmwares based on Sausalito have issues and if you're on this page then you probably are looking for an improved firmware. As of May 2008, the latest official MRT firmwares are:

Most people coming here will want improved firmwares:

  • Tinky (both Centroid & Gemini), an improved firmware derived from the Icy Box NAS-2000 firmware which also based on Sausalito. You probably want to not replace your MRT kernel when flashing Tinky.
  • OpenWRT Kamikaze v7.09 (Gemini only), the famous Debian-like firmware for NAS & home routers. This firmware runs entirely from flash disk and needs no hard drives at all - however, it is currently of beta quality, in particular there is some problem with heavy i/o on its JFFS flash drive (the system sometimes hangs during large file copies). Also, OpenWRT's web gui isn't fantastic and you will need to use a lot of console commands to fully configure a system.
  • OpenFSG (Gemini only) is about how to build the SnapGear based firmware for the Freecom Network Drive Pro product which also uses a Gemini chipset and should port very easily. Currently this has a booting kernel which makes it as far as mounting the system drive but unfortunately then kernel panics. If ANYONE could make some progress with this problem we'd all be VERY grateful as this is a near-perfect firmware for the MRT GigaNAS.

Currently, there is no known way of booting a full Debian release on Storlink products but this is likely coming at some point.
